Yakfishing 101: March 18

Ever thought kayak fishing sounds fun, but no idea how to get started? South Coast Paddling Company in Ocean Springs, MS is offering a Kayak Fishing Seminar on Thursday, March 18th @ 7 p.m. Continue reading

Recycle Gras! DO-nate your beads for free DO-nuts!

Finally got around to taking down the Mardi Gras decorations yesterday. Which means The Tree Formerly Known as The Mardi Gras Tree (and before that the Christmas Tree) has now morphed into the St Patty’s Day Tree. I love this tradition. First of all, my last name is Egan so a St. Patty’s Day tree helps me get in touch with my inner Irish even if I did have to marry into this good Irish name. Continue reading

Like Raw on roller skates – but with hot chicks

This Friday is Kevin’s birthday. I’m trying to figure out what I can do to top last year. That was his 50th so we went all out with a birthday party on Joe Cain Day. Then his employees threw a surprise party for him.  You should have seen his little face light up when they presented the gift they’d all chipped in for: a taser gun. What boy doesn’t want one of those? And not some bogus stun gun like they sell at the flea market. This was a real Taser x26. You know he’s had some fun with that in the last year. It was weeks before I could sleep through the night. Continue reading

Kiss your ash goodbye this Ash Wednesday

I stole this title from a Heroes ad in the Lagniappe. It was too good to resist and I’m going to plug the restaurant so it’s okay, right?

First I should say that Heroes is one of our favorite restaurants downtown. Love the grilled tuna salad. Every time we go there I think I’ll order something else. But I never do. Same thing with Kevin.

Love the deck. The perfect place to enjoy the Mobile weather, especially when there’s something going on in Cathedral Square. The prices are great, the vibe is good. What more could you ask for?

How about no smoke? Done. On February 17, 2010, Heroes will go smoke free inside. HAAA-lay-lou-ya. Continue reading

Need a little healing after Mardi Gras?

Who doesn’t? My church, Conscious Mile Center for Spiritual Living, has two unique concert events coming up to help you renew and regroup after the over-indulgences of Mardi Gras: A Tibetan Bowl concert on Feb. 21 and a Didgeridoo concert on Feb 24. If you’re into meditation (or even if you’re not), read on… Continue reading

Call me a neo-Luddite. Just call me.

I don’t really like Facebook. There I’ve said it. I know I’ll face public ridicule, possibly widespread ostracism.

So what gave me the courage to come out? The cover story in yesterday’s USAToday: “Friends no more?”. Apparently I’m not alone. Continue reading

Catch a rising star at Serda’s

Serda’s Coffee Shop downtown is another business I like to plug. It offers something for everyone: great coffee, good food, adult beverages, comfy sofas in a laid-back atmosphere and yoga on Thursday nights. What more could you ask for?

How about some of the best local music in town? Continue reading

Become a Preservation Leader this spring

The Mobile Historic Development Commission will offer its Preservation Leadership Class this spring. The course begins on Tuesday, March 9 and meets weekly for six weeks.  It will include an overview of the historic architecture of Mobile, a session on the guidelines used by the Architectural Review Board, guest speakers and a “hammer and nails” tour of a restoration project that is currently underway.

Deadline for registration is February 19. If you’re interested, call now – the class generally fills up early.  The fee for the class is $50. For more information call the MHDC office at 208-7281.

And the winner in the category of Best Theater in Mobile is…

the Crescent Theater on Dauphin Street downtown. Last week the powers that be in Hollywood announced the 2010 Oscar nominations. Five of the ten nominees for Best Picture played here in Mobile at, of all places, The Crescent (An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, A Serious Man, and Up in the Air).

So if you’re under the impression that you need to go to the megaplexes to see the best movies in town, think again. Continue reading

Update on Rickshaw Sean & his sidekick Cooper

Sean and Cooper share a birthday, and it’s coming up on February 13th. Cooper has put together a wish list: a new dog sweatshirt, heartworm medicine, tick and flea medicine, treats (but no raw hides). No specific birthday list for Sean but you can see a general wish list in my previous post. You can send gifts to 1014 Caroline St., Mobile, AL 36604. They’re here through February 16th.

Let’s show ’em some love, Mobile.
