NOLA’s Running of the Bulls

A Running of the Bulls a little closer to home than San Miguel de Allende and Pamplona.

A lot of tails are on the line: The world’s best cook-off, coming at you April 17

I’ve been to a cook-off or two in my day. And, geez oh pete, Mobile has its share of ‘em. Chili, wings, Irish stew. BBQ. They’re all good but I’m amazed how many people I talk to have never heard of what is, in my never-to-be-humble opinion, the best: The Annual Shrimp Cook-off. Continue reading

JAMmin’ with Jazz Appreciation Month in April

If you think March was jammed packed with things to do, wait until you see April. On top of Arts Alive!, it’s Jazz Appreciation Month and there’s a full calendar of jazzy events. The weather will be great, and events are either free or very inexpensive. So don’t tell me there’s nothing fun to do in Mobile, you can’t afford it or Mobile isn’t artzie. Get out there!

Originally I’d planned to post just a few of the “best” events from the list. I couldn’t choose so I’ve included the entire calendar. Here’s Sharman’s Q&D Guide to help you make your selections (details in the full list that follows):

Speak the JAMmin’ language, daddy-o

The MOJO (Mystic Order of the Jazz Obssessed) meeting last week was the bomb. Rosie O’Grady’s Good Time Jazz Band  and the Swingin’ Dick Traceys were bad (meaning really good in jazzspeak, of course). Jim Vail did Sinatra proud and Erma Granat – wooeee, that lady has some pipes. Continue reading

Get your MOJO workin’ on Monday nights

If you love jazz and you’ve never been to a MOJO meeting, you’ve really missed something. MOJO stands for the Mystic Order of the Jazz Obsessed. The group meets on the 4th Monday of each month, and you don’t have to be a member to attend. Each meeting features a live performance and a light jambalaya dinner for $10. Yes, $10! And it’s only $7 if you join! Don’t tell me you can’t afford that. Continue reading

Some things just ain’t right

Like the fact that it’s March 13th and the St Patrick’s Day celebrating is over. Hey, real Irish celebrate on the real St Patrick’s Day. We don’t let a little thing like work get in the way. Continue reading

As long as you’re in Biloxi next Saturday for the wiener dog races…

why not make a day of it and head to Gulfport to see Mobile Roller Derby take on the undefeated MS Rollergirls? Live music by the Cowboy Killers and beer (free according to the MS Rollergirls Facebook page!). Continue reading

Oakleigh’s biggest party of the year tomorrow

Callaghan’s Irish Social Club will celebrate St Patrick’s Day tomorrow, March 13th. If you’ve never been to Callaghan’s St. Patty’s Day party and you’re picturing a quaint celebration in a cozy Irish pub, this isn’t it. This is more like Mardi Gras with no gold or purple and more drunks.

The party starts at noon with traditional Irish music followed by bands all afternoon and into the evening.

There’ll also be live music at Callaghan’s on the real St. Patrick’s Day. For more information, go to the Callaghan’s web site.

Wiener dog races at the Hard Rock in Biloxi: March 20

What better way to spend a spring afternoon on the Gulf Coast? But this isn’t just any wiener dog race. First of all, it will be held at the Wet Spot, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s pool and the perfect venue for a wiener dog race. It’s worth the trip just to hang out for free at a luxe hotel pool for a few hours. Plus this event is a fund-raiser for Coast Young Professionals. So you figure there’s going to be some pretty good sightseeing around the pool.

But wait, there’s more! You can have your picture taken with a giant wiener dog! Continue reading

Like Raw on roller skates – but with hot chicks

This Friday is Kevin’s birthday. I’m trying to figure out what I can do to top last year. That was his 50th so we went all out with a birthday party on Joe Cain Day. Then his employees threw a surprise party for him.  You should have seen his little face light up when they presented the gift they’d all chipped in for: a taser gun. What boy doesn’t want one of those? And not some bogus stun gun like they sell at the flea market. This was a real Taser x26. You know he’s had some fun with that in the last year. It was weeks before I could sleep through the night. Continue reading
