Get a peek inside some fabulous historic homes: March 19-20

No peeking inside the medicine cabinets though. If you love historic homes, mark your calendar for the 2010 Mobile Historic Homes Tour coming up on March 19 & 20th. It will include six homes in the Ashland Place Historic District plus a weekend full of special events. To get an idea of the homes on the tour, go to the home tour website.

Become a Preservation Leader this spring

The Mobile Historic Development Commission will offer its Preservation Leadership Class this spring. The course begins on Tuesday, March 9 and meets weekly for six weeks.  It will include an overview of the historic architecture of Mobile, a session on the guidelines used by the Architectural Review Board, guest speakers and a “hammer and nails” tour of a restoration project that is currently underway.

Deadline for registration is February 19. If you’re interested, call now – the class generally fills up early.  The fee for the class is $50. For more information call the MHDC office at 208-7281.

R.I.P. Broad Street Texaco

Okay, Oakleighians, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. We’ve run off the “big old, monstrous-looking gas station,” (as Jaime Betbeze dubbed it).

On Tuesday, the Mobile City Council voted unanimously to deny the appeal of the developers who were planning to build a Texaco station on Broad St. south of Elmira. Continue reading
