Some things just ain’t right

Like the fact that it’s March 13th and the St Patrick’s Day celebrating is over. Hey, real Irish celebrate on the real St Patrick’s Day. We don’t let a little thing like work get in the way. Continue reading

Oakleigh’s biggest party of the year tomorrow

Callaghan’s Irish Social Club will celebrate St Patrick’s Day tomorrow, March 13th. If you’ve never been to Callaghan’s St. Patty’s Day party and you’re picturing a quaint celebration in a cozy Irish pub, this isn’t it. This is more like Mardi Gras with no gold or purple and more drunks.

The party starts at noon with traditional Irish music followed by bands all afternoon and into the evening.

There’ll also be live music at Callaghan’s on the real St. Patrick’s Day. For more information, go to the Callaghan’s web site.

Get a peek inside some fabulous historic homes: March 19-20

No peeking inside the medicine cabinets though. If you love historic homes, mark your calendar for the 2010 Mobile Historic Homes Tour coming up on March 19 & 20th. It will include six homes in the Ashland Place Historic District plus a weekend full of special events. To get an idea of the homes on the tour, go to the home tour website.

The special events include something for everyone, from afternoon tea to tours of various historic sites including a graveyard. Continue reading

Kiss your ash goodbye this Ash Wednesday

I stole this title from a Heroes ad in the Lagniappe. It was too good to resist and I’m going to plug the restaurant so it’s okay, right?

First I should say that Heroes is one of our favorite restaurants downtown. Love the grilled tuna salad. Every time we go there I think I’ll order something else. But I never do. Same thing with Kevin.

Love the deck. The perfect place to enjoy the Mobile weather, especially when there’s something going on in Cathedral Square. The prices are great, the vibe is good. What more could you ask for?

How about no smoke? Done. On February 17, 2010, Heroes will go smoke free inside. HAAA-lay-lou-ya. Continue reading

Cortlandt’s in Oakleigh opens…sort of

From Cortlandt Inge re his new restaurant on George Street in Oakleigh:

Drum roll….WE’RE OPEN FOLKS! We know you guys have been eager to come, so we’re opening before all things are in place, so BAR ONLY and CASH ONLY until AT&T installs our phone lines! We hope to have a limited menu next week and we’ll definitely post here when phone lines are in….Hours 4 PM to midnight!

From me: So go have yourself a drink. Once it opens for food, I’ll go eat and let you know what I think.

R.I.P. Broad Street Texaco

Okay, Oakleighians, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. We’ve run off the “big old, monstrous-looking gas station,” (as Jaime Betbeze dubbed it).

On Tuesday, the Mobile City Council voted unanimously to deny the appeal of the developers who were planning to build a Texaco station on Broad St. south of Elmira. Continue reading

Blitz tour of Downtown Mobile digs

As promised, I took the downtown home tour, aka “Open House Blitz,” last Sunday, along with Kevin and a handful of other people. Of course, the Saints were playing (although the kickoff was well after the tour ended). That, combined with the soggy weather, pretty much guaranteed the blitz would be a bomb.  Still, it was a good opportunity to get a feel for what’s on the market downtown and what’s going on with prices. Cream & Sugar update

The new coffee shop in Oakleigh on George St. is now open at 6 am, instead of 7 am as originally posted. Don’t look for me there at that hour but you might see Kevin. Click on What’s New to the right for more info on this new spot.

Listen up runners…

Hot off Facebook: … the new Oakleigh coffee shop , Cream & Sugar, would like to start a runners group. Go by @ 351 George St. to vote for a name and times.

I ask you…what could be better than running, then treating yourself to something decadent?

I don’t run unless someone’s chasing me…

but if you do, there are plenty of clubs in downtown and midtown with weekly runs. Continue reading
