  • Mobile Bay National Estuary Program – Provide contact information to the MBNEP office by phone at 251- 431-6409 or by email to
  • Pascagoula River Audubon Center – “If you are interested in being trained to help wash oiled birds, please email the Center (contact us) with your Full Name and phone number. We are being inundated with phone calls for volunteer request, please use the contact link to submit your information.”
  • – An excellent site created by a couple in Ocean Springs, MS. Includes general information on the volunteer effort (not Mississippi-specific) that is constantly updated. Mississippi-specific information includes how to sign up to volunteer and training sessions.

Wiener dog races at the Hard Rock in Biloxi: March 20

What better way to spend a spring afternoon on the Gulf Coast? But this isn’t just any wiener dog race. First of all, it will be held at the Wet Spot, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s pool and the perfect venue for a wiener dog race. It’s worth the trip just to hang out for free at a luxe hotel pool for a few hours. Plus this event is a fund-raiser for Coast Young Professionals. So you figure there’s going to be some pretty good sightseeing around the pool.

Grab your camera and go

The Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs is offering two events in February for outdoor photography buffs. On February 4, the lab will host An Evening of Images,” a  free visual presentation by nature photographer Tom Ulrich.  This is open to the public and free. On February 5, Tom will offer an Outdoor Digital Photography Workshop. The workshop is $40.

The lab is located one hour from Mobile in Ocean Springs, overlooking the Mississippi Sound. There are fabulous photo opportunities in the area. While you’re there, visit the Walter Anderson Museum for inspiration.
