Best links for info on the oil spill and volunteer opportunities

Here are some particularly good links I’ve found:

  • Mobile Bay National Estuary Program – Provide contact information to the MBNEP office by phone at 251- 431-6409 or by email to
  • Pascagoula River Audubon Center – “If you are interested in being trained to help wash oiled birds, please email the Center (contact us) with your Full Name and phone number. We are being inundated with phone calls for volunteer request, please use the contact link to submit your information.”
  • – An excellent site created by a couple in Ocean Springs, MS. Includes general information on the volunteer effort (not Mississippi-specific) that is constantly updated. Mississippi-specific information includes how to sign up to volunteer and training sessions.
  • Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana – Collecting volunteer information for Louisiana

I’ve deployed the vast resources of M&M to do a spring cleaning of the site so you may notice some changes.

Take a gander at the links on the right. I’ve freshened them up, deleted some of the static pages and adding new links for some sites I think you’ll enjoy: Continue reading

Fisherperson alert – you MUST check this out!

I’m not a fisherperson but if I were, I’d be all over this web site, It says it’s “built by fishermen for fishermen” but I’ll forgive that minor gender faux pas.

What’s so cool? Continue reading

Yoga under the big blue sky: April 3-May 22

Last fall we went to Thailand. One of the things I saw there was a large group of women practicing yoga in the park. I really wanted to join them but I didn’t have a mat or anything close (I shoulda done it anyway). Yoga outdoors. Ahhhhh.

One of my M&M stringers alerted me yesterday to a new outdoor all levels yoga class. Continue reading

Kiss your ash goodbye this Ash Wednesday

I stole this title from a Heroes ad in the Lagniappe. It was too good to resist and I’m going to plug the restaurant so it’s okay, right?

First I should say that Heroes is one of our favorite restaurants downtown. Love the grilled tuna salad. Every time we go there I think I’ll order something else. But I never do. Same thing with Kevin.

Love the deck. The perfect place to enjoy the Mobile weather, especially when there’s something going on in Cathedral Square. The prices are great, the vibe is good. What more could you ask for?

How about no smoke? Done. On February 17, 2010, Heroes will go smoke free inside. HAAA-lay-lou-ya. Continue reading

Have you seen the rickshaw man Sean & his dog Cooper tooling around Mobile?

Sean Robinson and Cooper arrived here in Mobile on their rickshaw a week or so ago, a pit stop on their one-year trip around the U.S. Apparently they’re so enamored with Mobile, they’ve decided to settle in for a couple of weeks.

New! Weekend movie matinees downtown

Crescent Theater is now offering 2:00 pm matinee screenings on Saturdays and Sundays, in addition to the two regular evening screenings.

Hey, if you haven’t been to the Crescent yet, you need to go. Especially if you’re not crazy about the megaplexes. This is a totally different kind of theater. Continue reading

Cream & Sugar update

The new coffee shop in Oakleigh on George St. is now open at 6 am, instead of 7 am as originally posted. Don’t look for me there at that hour but you might see Kevin. Click on What’s New to the right for more info on this new spot.

Listen up runners…

Hot off Facebook: … the new Oakleigh coffee shop , Cream & Sugar, would like to start a runners group. Go by @ 351 George St. to vote for a name and times.

I ask you…what could be better than running, then treating yourself to something decadent?
